Durban, South Africa; 5 May 2017: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment and communications group, recently announced the winners of the 2017 Ai Infrastructure Project Developers Awards.
The prestigious Ai Infrastructure Project Developers Awards recognise and reward excellence amongst Africa’s project developers to a pan-African and global infrastructure investment audience. Preqin was the official information Partner for the 2017 instalment of the Awards.
Commenting on the awards, Hubert Danso, CEO and Vice Chairman of Ai stated, “We are delighted to report that the award winners have already made an impact and contributed to the marked increase in venture and private equity-style investment into African project development platforms.” He further stated, “We congratulate all the awards winners and look forward to inspiring the industry to drive and accelerate their projects to financial close.”
Social Project Developer of the Year was awarded to Greenwish Partners; Helios Towers Africa walked away with the ICT Project Developer of the Year Award, and Nareva Holding was recognised for the Renewable Energy Project Developer of the Year. Africa Finance Corporation was recognised for Logistics/Transport Project Developer of the Year while Amandi Energy was the recipient of the Energy Project Developer of the Year Award. Private Sector Co-Developer of the Year was won by GE.
Transnet won for the Public Sector Co-Developer of the Year; Construction Company Co-Developer of the Year was awarded to Mota-Engil, and the Project Development Financier of the Year Award went to the InfraCo Africa. Fieldstone walked away with Project Development Advisor of the Year, while EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund was recognised as Project Preparation Facility of the Year. Project Development Fund of the Year went to Denham Capital.
Ai Developer of the Year was won by Mainstream Power; and the Sponsor of the Year went to Meridiam. The full winners’ list is below.
The Awards ceremony took place during the 3rd Ai CEO African Infrastructure Project Developers Summit co-hosted with Africa50, in Durban at the Southern Sun Maharani Hotel in Durban, South Africa.
The Summit launched the Benchmark for Investing in African Infrastructure Project Development (I4PD Benchmark)and received keynote addresses from His Excellency Mr Macky Sall, the President of Senegal and Her Excellency Mrs Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, the President of Mauritius.
The Summit had three primary objectives which were to foster a dialogue to:
1. Stimulate the necessary political will and processes that enable the continent to build a reputation of fast-tracking projects to financial close, within global norm time frames;
2. Drive down the perceived and actual risks and increase the competitiveness of African project development as an asset class; and
3. Better understand pension and sovereign funds so that relevant African stakeholders can develop instruments and platforms that are sensitive to their investment criteria.
